Project Books on the Table

About the project

As an eight year old who moved to America and not knowing English, I had to learn everything from ground zero with the help of a few gracious individuals. eight years later, I started this initiative to return the favor to those who helped me and built it on the idea that I would make sure that my students would not face their difficulties alone. The lessons would provide them with not only a tight-knit community, but a pathway to new job and life opportunities!

More About Us

Writing Lessons:

Our writing lessons implement writing in English and student-made translations to improve proficiency. The early phases begin with simple words and phrases and transgresses to grammatical lessons and more complicated sentence structures involving day to day scenarios.

Reading Lessons:

The reading lessons are the foundation of the program, with a library containing over 200 beginner level books to higher level learning books, students are encouraged to take one home at the end of each class and read it on their own time. This incentivizes each individual to have the curiosity to discover unknown words and familiarize themselves with the English language out of their own stimulus.

ABC:

The Alphabet is strongly reinforced and taught in the first few weeks for newcomers. Translations between English and Portuguese are made, as students try to grasp the difference in phonetic sounds. This is the fundamental block to building good reading and writing.

Counting to 1 Billion:

Students are taught how to count in English and how to pronounce and identify the values based on scale. Culturally new aspects of money such as (twenty one hundred) are taught and familiarized.

Experience Living Abroad:

As someone who has lived abroad and has many friends that did as well, I myself take questions on what it is like to live away from my native country culturally, socially, academically and professionally. I have had the pleasure to have some of my friends answer questions as well to our students.

Job Opportunities:

I host Q&A sessions with members of my community who have worked abroad and have them answer questions about professional opportunities in foreign countries and how having English as a tool opened new doors for them.

Opening New Pathways

The project’s core goal is not to teach English, but to provide our students with the means to have a better life and opportunities which were previously unattainable due Brazil’s social conditions.

Better Professional Opportunities

With English under their belt, our students are prepared to take on higher level jobs.

Better Global View

With the Q & A sessions, a new language, and networking opportunities provided through the course, our students are able to absorb new knowledge and build on their world view.

Means for Social Ascension:

Our students once the course is complete are equipped with the tools to improve their quality of life.

Empowering Students

Our goal is to empower independence and strength in our students.

App we use

DUOLINGO

Duolingo is a popular language-learning app designed to make acquiring new languages fun and accessible. In the program it has been implemented as a tool to actively have contact with the English Language, thus becoming a catalyst for the development of the students. It offers bite-sized lessons and exercises across a variety of languages, incorporating elements of gamification to engage users. With features like daily streaks, leaderboards, and rewards, it encourages consistent practice. Duolingo provides lessons that cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, making it suitable for both beginners and advanced learners. Additionally, it includes a free version and a premium subscription for an ad-free experience and offline access to lessons.

News:

Project creator

I am an 18 year old international student who attends Graded: The American School of São Paulo. Having lived 6 years in the US, splitting time between California and Florida, has significantly accelerated my academics and drive towards dedication and commitment. It shaped me into a person that looks to help others so they can be more independent, more developed, and able to embody a holistic aspect of life. Outside of the project, I am the vice-captain of the school varsity soccer team, winning multiple national and international tournaments, and have dedicated much of my time to grant underserved children with access to sports. I am a lifelong Patriots fan and Grêmio supporter here in Brazil.
